Mother and Her Boys Lose Lives On Philadelphia Highway

The rates of violent crime in Philadelphia may be slowly declining, but this doesn’t mean that the streets are getting any safer.
Recently, in July, a mother and her four boys were struck by a car that was allegedly racing with another vehicle in the adjacent lane. Samara Banks was attempting to lead her sons across Roosevelt Boulevard, known as one of the most dangerous stretches of road in the Northeast, when they were hit by a 2012 Audi that witnesses claimed to be engaging a 1994 Honda. This horrific crash left Banks and three of her sons dead, with the fourth remaining in stable condition in the hospital.
But while we would like to believe otherwise, nightmarish events like this are commonplace along this highway, as well as on the busy streets of downtown Philadelphia.
The Streets Aren’t Safe
In 2011 alone, 83 fatal traffic accidents occurred in the city of Philadelphia, with a host of them taking place along the heavily trafficked boulevard in the story above. And each year, over 150 individuals are involved in fatal traffic accidents, with an average of 100 perishing each year.
And this data doesn’t even include accidents in which individuals are hurt but not killed, with these additional numbers spiking the statistics to extremely high levels.
So Whats the Problem?
Many government personnel believe that drag racing is the reason that these statistics have swollen so much over the recent years. Drag racing is a common sport in Philadelphia, with Roosevelt Boulevard often being the course of choice due to its long and winding stretches that bisect the city.
But other voices claim that the true problem lies in the lack of speed patrols along the highway, as well as the complete absence of crosswalks that allow pedestrians to maneuver the highway safely. In installing these segments, many believe that the pedestrian deaths in traffic accidents along this unforgiving highway would drop dramatically.
Protecting Yourself and Your Loved Ones
When traveling along the roads of Philadelphia, its important to take certain precautions in order to remain safe and healthy as you move about the city.
If you have children, make sure they are in your sights at all time, and do not let them cross without your knowledge. Make sure to observe traffic on the roads at all time, and wait for gaps in automobiles that are large enough to allow you to pass. And if it is truly necessary for you to cross a busy highway, search for the closest crosswalk that will alert oncoming cars of your presence.
But even with diligence, preventing an accident is not always possible. And if you find yourself or your loved one the victim of a traffic accident, it is best that you contact an attorney immediately to help protect you down the rest of the road.
